Moodboard

Illustration of Moodboard

In short

A moodboard is a curated collection of images, colours, typefaces and materials that makes a design direction visible before any design work starts. It turns adjectives like «calm» or «premium» into something two people understand the same way. Its value lies less in what is on it than in what was deliberately left off – it is a decision tool, not an inspiration wall.

What it is really for

The most expensive misunderstanding in a design project happens in week one: everybody says «modern», and everybody means something different. A moodboard exposes that gap while it still costs nothing.

That is why it comes before the first draft, not alongside it. If you only discover at the logo stage that expectations diverge, you pay for the correction with a whole round of drafts.

The common mistake: more is better

A moodboard with sixty images shows no direction; it shows all of them. The message comes from selection – and from the counter-example that is explicitly not meant.

A useful board therefore has two halves: what we want and what we do not want. The second half often settles more than the first.

For a Swiss company

A moodboard is an internal working tool. The moment an image from it ends up in a published brand presence, copyright applies (Copyright Act, SR 231.1) – you then need a licence or a photograph of your own, even if the image sat on the board for months.

The second point is honesty about your own market: a board full of architecture shots from Copenhagen looks good, but the customers of a joinery north of Zurich will not recognise themselves in it.

How we handle it

For us the moodboard sits between positioning and first draft: first it is clear what the brand stands for, then how that should feel, and only then how it looks. Corporate design and typography are derived from the board afterwards.

It is part of our brand identity work – from the first board to a style guide your team actually uses day to day.
