Voice over IP
In short
VoIP stands for Voice over IP and means telephony carried over the data line rather than a separate telephone network. The call is broken into data packets and transmitted like any other internet traffic. For the person calling nothing changes – the number stays the same, only the route behind it is different.
What actually changes for a company
The phone system stops being a box in the server room and becomes a service. Extensions, forwarding and greetings get configured where everything else is configured, rather than by someone who has to come round.
The second change is place. A number no longer belongs to a socket but to a person. Anyone working on the road or from home is reachable on the same business number, and their private number stays private.
The dependency worth knowing beforehand
Telephony over the data line means: no line, no phone. The old fixed network ran independently of the internet; now both fail together.
Anyone who has to stay reachable therefore needs a second line or automatic diversion to mobile numbers. That is not an accessory, it is the part that counts when it matters – and it is the part that regularly disappears when monthly prices are compared.
For Switzerland
Fixed-line connections here now run over IP; a classic analogue network is no longer available. For most companies the question is therefore no longer whether, but with what.
An existing number can be taken along when switching provider – that is where a move usually stalls, and it is regularly easier than feared. Anyone already using Microsoft 365 can bring telephony into Teams and then needs no second system beside it.
How we handle it
We settle the line first and the system second. Telephony running on a congested internet connection sounds bad, and that is not a fault of the telephony.
