SMM

Social Media Marketing

Illustration of SMM

In short

SMM is the umbrella term for everything a company does on social platforms to win customers. It covers both halves: the organic side that runs without media spend (SMO) and paid distribution through ads. Saying SMM while meaning only ads leaves out half the discipline – usually the half that compounds.

SMM is the sum, not one of its halves

The equation is plain: SMM = SMO + paid distribution. SMO covers profile, content, community and the reach you earn without budget. Paid buys reach on top of it.

The term still gets shortened constantly. Hearing «we do SMM» and picturing ads understates how much happens without a single franc of media spend – and running purely organic while calling it SMM undersells the work.

Sequence decides what it costs

Running ads into a weak profile is expensive. Someone who clicks lands on a channel and finds either a brand that visibly works, or three months of silence. The second option costs the same per click and returns nothing.

So the order is organic foundation first, then budget – not as a principle, but because paid reach pointed at an empty page is the most expensive way to spend money.

Where SMM actually breaks down in SMEs

Not budget, not creativity – cadence. A channel that runs for two weeks and then goes quiet for three months is worse than none: it proves nobody currently owns it.

The second failure is mistaking reach for effect. A post with 10,000 views and zero enquiries is not a win; it is expensive information about the wrong topic. The number that matters is covered under KPI.

How we handle it

We keep the two halves separate, because they need different skills and different budgets. Organic runs through social media optimisation, paid through social media ads.

No media budget before measurement works. Without conversion tracking you see clicks and cost but not which post produced an enquiry – and then you optimise the number you can see instead of the one that counts.
